...FIFA condemned the mayhem in the southern city of Joinville, where fan fighting halted a decisive Brazilian league match for more than an hour Sunday. Four people were hospitalized, including one person who was airlifted from the field.
"This is very sad for Brazilian football," FIFA said in a statement to The Associated Press on Monday. "FIFA and the local organizing committee condemn any form of violence and such incidents should not happen in any football stadium."...
... The Pedrinhas prison, plagued by riots and gang wars, is located in the state capital. Sixty inmates were murdered there last year, and another two in the first week of 2014.
National Security Force troops were stationed there to quell recent violence, but in retaliation, according to authorities, crime lords serving time at Pedrinhas ordered a violent spree in the city.
Several buses were set on fire, injuring a number of people and killing a six-year-old girl.
The escalation of violence in and out of the state's prisons has shocked Brazil, and led the nation to take a closer look at the local authorities.
... The rights group Amnesty International also expressed concern Wednesday with the "increasing violence and lack of concrete solutions" in the Maranhao state prison system.
About 500,000 inmates are locked up in Brazil's more than 1,200 prisons, and prison breaks and uprising are common.
Justice Minister Jose Eduardo Cardozo has said that Brazil had "a medieval prison system that violates human rights."
Similar prison conditions exist elsewhere around Latin America....
